Commentary: Flames of War

There are potential flames of regional war if we continue to fund this
surging war for another year. It will open new rivers of blood upon our
own troops and the Iraqi people. Drawing in neighboring governments to
preserve the American invasion may precipitate a massive explosion of
anger among Middle East populations.

Should the insurgency prevail now, insurgents would remain to rebuild
their country, as did American rebels when we drove out the British.
There is little likelihood that they would go elsewhere. Suicide bombing
is not really fun.

Surrounding nations can bring stability to the Middle East by providing a
peacekeeping force when U.S. troops leave, until Iraq can elect its own
truly representative government. But to join U.S. forces and the
collaborating al-Maliki government would outrage their own populations,
possibly igniting Armageddon.
